Why I Love Her

Several years ago I read an interesting article on removing data from hard drives. Since the drive head has some random variation in its path every time, the shoulders of the road it travels have some data on them. So, even if you write zeros to the entire disk, someone with the right equipment can see the remains of your data. The author of the article wrote some software to eradicate the data on the disk (without destroying the disk) by writing values some number of times.

Under OS X, the Disk Utility allows you to erase the data from a disk. Guess what one of the options is? That's right, write values a bunch of times.

That's the kind of detail I appreciate. And that's why I love her.
